Layil Umbralux

Layil Umbralux was born in Paris, to Argentine parents of Italian descent. Her artistic tendencies stem from a young age, and people have long been a focal point of her fascination. Early exposures to fantasy, science fiction and mythology have shaped her understanding of the world and are evident in her images. Raised in Northern California, she elected to skip high school to pursue an art vocation at the San Francisco Academy of Art. Two years later, she transferred to New York City’s School of Visual Arts to complete her Illustration BFA, taking a special interest in comics and an internship at Marvel Entertainment. Layil moved to Barcelona in 2002 where she spent 3 years independently developing her art studies and enjoying the city’s ambiance and artistic history. From there, she traveled around Europe, collaborating on Art Education Workshops which resulted in her 2005 return to San Francisco and 2 formative years enrolled at what later became the Safehouse Atelier. Studio Umbralux is currently a resident at the Safehouse Studios facility in SF, where Layil continues to study and create. While regularly keeping up with new work for art shows, Layil is building her artistic community around the US and abroad, and next plans to foray into screen printing and wearable designs integrating her drawings as additional mediums of expression. Grounded in tradition, her work has an evolving style, with influences including Classical Naturalism, the Secession movement, Comics & SciFi, Street art, and Calligraphy. There is a Visionary aspect, as it relays the Mythical and Occult realities, while embodying these in everyday elements and natural objects of beauty. With an eye for sacred geometry and poetic-conjunction, Layil creates compositions Intended to draw the viewer into the energetic space, communicating truth through illusion.
